RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment Joining Information:

Complete & submit eMedical Declaration Form PRIOR to your course:

Location: Port of Poole Marina, Poole


0.5 day training + 0.5 day skills assessment = 09:30 - 17:00/17:30

0.5 day Skills assessment only = 13:00-17:00/17:30


Winter Timings (Nov - Feb):

0.5  day training + 0.5 day skills assessment = 09:00 - 16:30/17:00

0.5 day Skills assessment only = 12:30 - 16:30/17:00


What to bring: 

  • Summer: Warm jumper/ jacket, sunglasses, suncream, cap
  • Winter: jacket, warm clothing, including a hat, gloves etc
  • Non-marking footwear - i.e. sailing boots / trainers
  • Lifejacket (150N) or Buoyancy aid (50N) - if you have one, otherwise we will provide this
  • Wet weather gear - we are UNABLE to provide these during COVID-19
  • Water / drinks for on the boat
  • Packed lunch & drinks - we are UNABLE to provide drinks etc during COVID-19
  • RYA Powerboat level 2 certificate 
  • RYA Powerboat Logbook or Instructor handbook if you have one. 

Assessment / what to expect:

  • Background theory knowledge assessment
  • Practical skills assessment (similar to the Powerboat level 2 direct assessment)

All / many items within the RYA Powerboat level 2 syllabus will be assessed. Please refer to the RYA Powerboat logbook (G20) for further details. 

It is expected that all candidates should be able to demonstrate a level of proficiency in each subject being assessed. Therefore, the candidate should be able to explain the subject in great depth, including background theory and practical demonstration. 


"An example would be IRPCS. The candidate can explain and demonstrate correct action to be taken to avoid collisions with other craft, principally rules 5, 7, 8, 89, 12-19."

  Possible Assessment Outcomes: 

  • PASS
  • ACTION PLAN - If for any reason you do not quite meet the criteria set by the RYA, then the outcome may be that you receive an action plan. This will be written and give clear guidance on the items you are required to complete prior to being issued with your Powerboat Skills Assessment Pass. You will always receive a S.M.A.R.T. action plan (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) that will be discussed and agreed with you. Example actions are:- Improving powerboat handling skills, Improve background knowledge etc.  
  • FAIL - Hopefully this is unlikely, so don't even think about it!
