RYA / MCA Advanced CoC Commercial Powerboat Exam


Pre-Exam requisites:

Minimum age: 17

Certificates: First aid, VHF/SRC

Experience: 2 years including night pilotage. As a guide; 30 days, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles, 12 night hours. If you hold the RYA Advanced Powerboat Course Completion Certificate the experience is reduced to 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles, 12 night hours. Background knowledge to the level of RYA Yachtmaster Theory

Exam duration:

  • 1 candidate: 4-5 hours
  • 2 candidates: 5-6 hours
  • 3 candidates: 6-7 hours

Personal kit required: 

  • 150 -  275 Newton Lifejacket with DoT approved lifejacket light
  • Appropriate clothing (minimum: wet weather gear)


Vessel requirements:

If you are providing your own boat:

The vessel will need to be seaworthy and capable of a minimum of 12 knots; it will need to be equipped with the following:

  • Compass
  • Lights conforming with IRPCS
  • VHF radio (may be portable)
  • GPS (may be handheld) or chart plotter
  • Depth sounder
  • Anchor, chain & warp
  • Tow line
  • Basic tool kit & spares
  • Heaving line
  • Passes or additional means of propulsion
  • Flares: 2 red handheld, 2 orange smoke
  • Bilge pump or bucket/bailer
  • First Aid kit

Additionally; if not on the boat, you will need to bring:

  • laminated or waterproof charts
  • Tide tables
  • Pilotage information for the local area e.g. pilot books, port info etc
  • Plotting instruments

Exam Fees:

Exam fees: £193-00pp (2021)

Advanced Exam fees are payable directly to the RYA. 

This fee is payable regardless of whether you are using your own boat or hiring one. 

School boat hire for exams:

Fees will be calculated according to the number attending the exam.
